Academic Advisor
MASTER'S PROGRAMME IN "BREAST DISEASES" · NKUA SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
Academic Advisor
At the beginning of their studies, each student enrolled in the Master's Programme in "Breast Diseases" is assigned an Academic Advisor from the Programme's teaching staff. The Academic Advisor serves as a consistent point of contact for matters relating to the student's academic progress. The Academic Advisor system is mandatory, as personalised guidance plays an important role in ensuring the smooth progression and successful completion of students' studies.
Who Is Appointed as an Academic Advisor?
Academic Advisor duties are undertaken by faculty members who teach on the Programme, regardless of their academic rank. Depending on the number of postgraduate students, the Coordinating Committee may also assign Academic Advisor duties to members of Special Educational Staff (EEP), Laboratory Teaching Staff (EDIP) and Special Technical Laboratory Staff (ETEP), as well as doctoral degree holders, emeritus professors and retired faculty members, provided that they teach on the Programme.
Students are assigned to Academic Advisors by decision of the Coordinating Committee. Each Advisor is responsible for guiding and monitoring the academic progress of one or more students throughout their studies. Replacement of an Academic Advisor is permitted only in exceptionally serious circumstances, following a recommendation from the Coordinating Committee.
Scope of Support
The role of the Academic Advisor is to provide advice and guidance. Students may consult their Advisor on the following matters:
- Academic Matters: Addressing difficulties related to coursework, clinical practice or the application of the Study Regulations.
- Master's Thesis: Guidance on selecting a thesis topic based on scientific interests and professional goals.
- Career Prospects: Information on career development opportunities in the public and private sectors, self-employment and abroad.
- University Facilities and Services Information on the services provided by NKUA to postgraduate students, such as the issuance of academic identity cards and the activities of the International Relations Office.
- Exceptional Circumstances: Guidance on managing personal or other circumstances that may affect academic progress.
The Academic Advisor works to identify appropriate solutions to any difficulties that may arise. The Advisor may also take the initiative to contact a student if persistent absences or a decline in academic performance are identified, ensuring that potential problems are addressed promptly.
In addition, the Academic Advisor identifies and records any needs that may affect a student's studies and recommends appropriate support measures, such as accessible facilities or examination accommodations, in coordination with the relevant university authorities.
The Academic Advisor and the Master's Thesis Supervisor have distinct roles. The Academic Advisor provides guidance and support throughout the student's overall academic journey and, where necessary, refers the student to the appropriate university service. The Thesis Supervisor is responsible exclusively for guiding and supervising the Master's Thesis.
Contact
Meetings with the Academic Advisor are arranged by appointment. The Academic Advisor serves as the first point of contact for complaints or appeals, except those concerning the ranking of applicants during the admissions selection process and matters relating to resit examinations, for which separate procedures apply.
