The Programme

The MSc Programme in Breast Diseases at the School of Medicine of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens trains healthcare professionals in the contemporary prevention, diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant breast diseases, while also introducing them to research in the field. Its aim is to provide comprehensive scientific training—effectively, advanced specialisation—grounded in current national and international guidelines.

The curriculum covers the full spectrum of breast diseases, from prevention and diagnosis to treatment and long-term patient care. It addresses heredity, risk factors and screening, as well as diagnostic methods including mammography, ultrasonography, breast MRI and percutaneous biopsy. Training also extends to breast and axillary surgery, systemic therapies, radiotherapy and psychological support for patients.

The care of patients with breast disease requires collaboration among numerous specialties. The Programme therefore adopts a genuinely multidisciplinary perspective: surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and specialists from other disciplines teach together, each contributing expertise from their role in the patient pathway.

The Programme spans three semesters and comprises 90 ECTS credits. During the first two semesters, theoretical teaching runs alongside compulsory clinical training in Breast Units, operating theatres and collaborating departments. The third semester is devoted to the master’s dissertation.
